Most IRS notices are routine and resolvable in one round-trip — if you respond on time and with the right documents. Here's the playbook.
Step 1: Identify the notice number
Top-right corner. CP2000 = income mismatch. CP14 = balance due. CP504 = intent to levy. The notice number defines the procedure.
Step 2–4: Read, calendar, document
Read it fully (twice). Note the response deadline. Gather every document the notice references.
Step 5–7: Respond, follow up, appeal
Respond by certified mail with copies (never originals). Expect 8–12 weeks for IRS reply. If denied, you have appeal rights — use them before paying anything.
